War is difficult to understand. The human toll, so massive and overwhelming, is felt vividly by those directly involved. But it’s hard to wrap your head around something like that when you’re removed from it, whether by distance or time.

Director Peter Jackson (THE LORD OF THE RINGS) set out to bridge that gap as he crafted a documentary to honor the lives of the British soldiers who fought in World War I. The result is THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD, a stunning technical achievement that takes footage from over 100 years ago and gives it a stunning, visceral immediacy unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

We’ve all seen the grainy black-and-white footage of soldiers and trenches and tanks, moving at unnatural speeds due to the frame rates of cameras at the time. It’s fascinating, sure, but it’s hard for a modern viewer to look at footage like that and connect to the humanity of the people onscreen.

Jackson and his team at WETA Digital spent years restoring over 100 hours of footage, using cutting edge technology to colorize, stabilize, and slow it down to a standard 24 frames per second. They even converted the film to 3D in order to give it an added layer of depth.

The result is breathtaking. British soldiers from over a century ago, long dead, are brought to stunning life. No longer does one feel the remove of time; these are living, breathing human beings living through a horrific conflict and putting their lives on the line for their country and loved ones.

Whether or not you’re a history buff, THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD is an emotional, gripping film (and a landmark cinematic achievement) that deserves to be seen on the big screen.
