Academy Award nominee for Best Animated Feature Film. A poignant and heartfelt chronicle of an outsider finding her confidence Set in Australia in the 1970s, MEMOIR OF A SNAIL tells the story of siblings Grace and Gilbert. After the passing of their father, both children are separately placed in foster care, which causes both a lot of grief. While Grace grows up with a loving couple, Gilbert is sent to a cruel evangelical family living in an orchard. A snail collector of all sorts, Grace gradually withdraws into her shell out of loneliness and sadness. Gilbert has always been her protector and best friend, and she misses him dearly. Trying to hold onto her hope of seeing Gilbert again, Grace’s taste for life is jump-started again after she meets an old, eccentric, and totally punk rock woman, Pinky. Academy Award-winner Adam Elliot’s heartwarming stop-motion feature is a beautiful, sad but funny story about friendship, family, and hope. Voiced by Sarah Snook as Grace and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Gilbert, MEMOIR OF A SNAIL will shake you to the core. It’s impossible not to think of Tim Burton while watching Elliot’s second film, but MEMOIR OF A SNAIL has its own identity and charm, and a lot of thought has been put into the creation of the sets and characters. There’s a very good chance of tears while watching, but they’ll be tears of joy by the end of this gloomy yet hopeful and wonderful story about the bond between siblings. You’ll never look at snails the same way again, and you should make sure you pack some tissues before walking into the theater. Good tears. We swear.
